Drywall Calculator

Estimate drywall sheets for walls and ceilings, plus joint compound, paper tape and optional screws. Use multiple rooms and your actual sheet size.

Get an area-based purchase estimate with an editable cut allowance. Sheet layout, fastening schedules and fire-rated assemblies are not designed by this calculator.

Measure the rooms once

Walls, ceiling and openings. Every material below reads these.

Length and width of the floor, and the wall height.

Doors & windows entered once — each material decides how to treat them

What are you calculating?

Pick one or several. Each reads the rooms above.

Drywall

Off by default: board is usually hung across an opening and cut out, and the piece removed is rarely reusable.

USG lists its 1/2 in. UltraLight panels at 4 ft wide in lengths from 8 to 16 ft, and 54 in. × 12 ft. The four commonest are offered; any other size is entered as Custom. 4 × 8 is the default only because it is the shortest listed length — choose the size you will actually hang.

in

For the order sheet — it does not change the count.

Typical practice — not a published figure. No USG or Gypsum Association document gives a percentage; sheets are counted by area, with no layout optimisation.

%

Use the percentage appropriate to your cutting plan.

Finishing

USG: approximately 9.4 gal per 1,000 sq. ft. of gypsum panels. Packaged in 3.5 gal cartons.

USG: approximately 370 ft. of paper joint tape per 1,000 sq. ft. of gypsum panels. Rolls of 75, 250 and 500 ft.

No default: USG specifies spacing (12 in. ceilings, 16 in. walls), not a count.

How many sheets of drywall?

Add the wall and ceiling areas you intend to board. Divide by sheet area, apply the cut allowance and round up once to whole sheets. A 4 × 8 ft sheet covers 32 ft²; 4 × 10 covers 40 ft²; 4 × 12 covers 48 ft². The custom option supports another sheet size. Thickness is recorded for ordering and does not change sheet area.

Openings and cutting allowance

The default retains door and window areas in the board quantity: boards may be installed across openings and then cut out. You may enable deduction for your layout. The 10% cut allowance is explicitly a planning assumption, not a USG requirement. Adjust it after reviewing orientation, ceiling height, offcuts and reusable pieces. An area estimate cannot guarantee the minimum sheet count for a layout.

Worked example: walls and ceiling

A 12 × 10 ft room with 8 ft walls has 352 ft² of walls and 120 ft² of ceiling. Keeping openings gives 472 ft². With 10% extra, 472 × 1.10 ÷ 32 = 16.225 sheets: purchase 17 sheets at 4 × 8 ft. The material order records your selected thickness; choose the actual board type from the project requirements.

Compound and paper tape

The USG Soquete preset estimates 9.4 US gallons of compound per 1,000 ft² of board and 3.5-gallon cartons. For 472 ft², that is 4.4368 gallons, rounded to two cartons. USG’s paper-tape estimate of 370 linear ft per 1,000 ft² gives 174.64 ft, or one 250 ft roll. These are approximate consumption factors applied before the cut allowance. Custom compound inputs are for ready-mix volume, not dry powder weight.

What the estimate excludes

The sheet calculation does not optimize seams or locate studs. It does not choose fire rating, moisture resistance, framing spacing or a ceiling assembly. Screw quantity appears only if you supply screws per sheet. Corner bead, trim and specialty finish levels need additional measurements or product-specific estimating.

Questions before you order

Does a thicker board change the sheet count?

Not for the same width and length. Thickness is order metadata. Choose the board required by your design and installation conditions.

Why is the compound allowance based on area before waste?

Cutoff pieces are not finished. Compound and tape use the selected board area before the sheet-cut allowance, with approximate manufacturer rates. This is a purchasing estimate rather than a seam-by-seam takeoff.

Can I use a powder compound?

The current compound calculation is in gallons of ready-mix. It does not convert gallons into pounds of powder; confirm powder quantities using the product’s own yield.

Product sources and assumptions

Presets describe named products, not every product in that material family. Confirm current label coverage, sizes, availability and preparation instructions. Custom values let you use the product you are buying. Prices are entered by you.
